Mastering colour: Designing harmonious spaces in our NT climate

Over the course of a 25-year journey, I’ve had the privilege of working with clients from diverse corners of the world, forging an intimate understanding of colour psychology and the delicate art of harmonising colours in a multitude of environments. Whether it’s a cosy haven within a home or the dynamic setting of an office, I’ve honed my skills to breathe life into spaces through colour.

As an Interior Designer, staying attuned to industry trends is part of my role, and the recently revealed Dulux 2024 forecast, for me, is an essential resource for understanding evolving colour preferences. While I adore the colours in Dulux’s palette, their suitability in our tropical and humid Territory environment can be challenging to work into our interiors.  The deep moody hues of Dulux’s forecast, while captivating, can create a heavy atmosphere when used excessively on walls.

Dulux’s 2024 colour forecast palettes feature warm colours with a yellow inference, pink-influenced clay hues and reddy browns, olive green and accents of pale blue and zesty yellow.

While these moody hues may not be good choice for wall colours in our Northern Territory climate, considering their clever integration into various elements of your space can be transformative. I take a creative approach to address this challenge by seamlessly infusing these rich deep tones into furniture, accessories, soft furnishings, or bedding. In doing so, we can introduce the allure of these gorgeous forecasted colours while preserving an environment that remains inviting, comfortable, and harmonious, aligning perfectly with our region’s unique character. This approach not only allows us to stay on-trend with Dulux 2024’s colour palette but also ensures that our design choices strike the right balance between style and climate-consciousness.

As an experienced designer in the Northern Territory, my understanding of paint colours and their interaction with the unique lighting conditions and climate has evolved into a well-defined palette that suits our region’s distinct characteristics.

One of the cardinal rules I follow is to avoid yellow-based cream colours and a lot of warm whites. The ever-changing light in the Northern Territory can play tricks on these hues, turning them into unpleasant, yellowish tones. Antique white, a beloved colour elsewhere in Australia, falls into this category and doesn’t work in our Northern Territory light. Instead, I choose warm whites that maintain their freshness and have a brown base, rather than a yellow base. Two standout choices for Darwin are Dulux ‘Natural White’ and ‘Whisper White’. These warm whites offer a crisp, clean appearance that doesn’t shift towards yellow in our unique light conditions.

For art enthusiasts like myself, it’s crucial that the walls serve as the perfect canvas to make artworks pop. That’s why I always recommend ‘Vivid White’ or ‘Lexicon’ ¼. These cool, crisp whites act as the perfect background as they don’t absorb colour allowing artworks to retain their vibrancy and true colour.  It’s a strategic choice for those who take pride in their art collections.

In terms of colours that harmonise with the Northern Territory environment, I’ve found sages, muted greens, and blues to be particularly effective. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these colours align with energy-efficient principles, which is especially pertinent in our climate. They also bring a sense of regenerative calm to interiors, which is welcoming in the often-intense Territory heat.
